Is the UK’s economic recovery vulnerable to flood risk?

A look at small-to-medium size businesses indicates cause for worry.

Flooding across the UK in the past few years has taken a significant economic toll just as the economic recovery is gathering steam. According to the Federation for Small Businesses (FSB), small firms have lost around £830m as a result of the recent UK flooding creating a significant shock to any flooded business, particularly any with already weak financials. Given small firms form a strong engine for economic growth we wanted to explore just how exposed this sector and therefore the UK economy is to flooding. To do this we analysed AMEE’s unique combination of business and environmental risk data across the entire UK to assess exposure.
